Theatre for children and storytelling

Theatre for children and storytelling

Tuesday 10th September 2013

themes that we came up with as a class...
  • Road Safety
  • Healthy  Eating
  • Effects of children watching horror films.
  • Effects of children playing violent video games.
  • kids growing up to fast.
the themes that I contributed was share within the group with other group members coming up with the same idea's or Road Safety the other idea that I contributed was Healthy Eating, this theme came to mind as most children don't know what they are eating if it is good or bad for them and this theme would explore the ways that eating unhealthy could have on a child's life.

when me and Kat were paired up we choose the theme or horror films and the effects of horror films on children I contributed the idea at the being where we started of comical as children enjoy a performance that makes them laugh, I played the character that was scared of the film and Kat played the character that enjoyed watching the film, also I contributed the idea of throwing the popcorn in to the air to show to the audience that I was scared of what I was watching this was the meat of story as it was the middle section of the story to end the story I contributed the idea of my character constantly waking up during the night to show that film had effected the child mind and to think that what he had seen in the film was really, to make this effected we used very little dialogue and not much sound we let our gesture tell the story.

when me and Kat where paired with another pair Tom and Natasha our stories interlinked with each other I contributed to the 10 minutes story with very little dialogue and mainly sound effects by suggesting to the video game scene that the two actor who are off stage should play the video game character but play the game around the audience as a group we decided to present our work in the round so the audience could sort of be involved also I contributed the idea in the second scene of the video games story the two actors who was off stage should play different TV channels around the audience by doing this in involves the audience more within our piece so me and Kat acted a children presenters on Cbeebies and play tennis also being news reporters and TV chiefs over the audience and doing a Rose and Jack scene from "Titanic" in front of the audience to build a effect of interaction with our audience.

Tuesday 17th September

To complete todays tasks we had to work on eye contact with my peers within a game "no you didn't" this was a changellening task for me as I struggle with eye contact with my partner as we had to come up with a story on the spot with out any rehersal and that had to be brand new I struggle to think of a story on the spot that had meet to it so the audience could pick it out also I stuggle to keep an constant eye contact with my partner and I was looking around and at some point I stood on stage in position that I wasn't interested, next time to improve this I would try to come up with a story that has a focus point that the audience could find and have more eye contact with my partner so I can encage more within the story that they were telling. we also worked in group to do some voice work with this song the banana song, to apply this to acting we created a TV advert with the banana song lyrics as the dialogue of the actor.

after learning the doing the TV advert we read the stimulus for 1 minute presentation based on the story of don Quirkie from the text we learn that Don Qurkie is an old man who believe he is a knight by reading book and decides to go on his own quest to become a full knight with people along the way believing he is weird once we read the first chapter we had to come up with a one minute presentation I found this task changeling as I wasn't sure what time era it could be in it could have been the time that the book is set or it could have been modern times also I found challenging was which character could I present I decide to be the ink keeper and set my presentation in modern time but it was a struggle to think of something to say as well keeping to the timing of one minute.

As homework we had to come up with a character that could be developed.

My original character
Name: Malki
Age: 13 years old
Background: Malki hasn't had to best of lives as his parent are poor as they don't have that much money so he doesn't have some of the latest thing as his friends does, he lives born and lives in Liverpool as spend most of his time out with his mates, he likes to play at lot of tricks on his friends and teachers by telling them that he can read their minds and see the future this trick plays with a lot of his teachers minds as they believe everything that he says them.

Introducing character

To start to work on character had had to warm up our imagination and our voice though different technics, to warm up the voice we learnt the song Babatundaza  this was hard to sing as you had to get the pernoucation right for the song to work.

Working on  a character
when starting to work on a character I did the naturalistic task of building my character from the feet up imagining what are they wear on their body and how do they look by saying out load to yourself you start to become that character so I described my character to I have plain black trainers from sports direct, then having dark blue denim jeans from Tesco with a plain black leather belt also from Tesco with a blue cotton t-shirt from sports direct again with a blue cotton hoodie and have dark black hair, once I had visualised my character I then thought of how they walked and talked as I had to present my character to the class so to achieve this I had to act a day of the life of my character by think of any work that the character might as my character doesn't have work but school I acted like I was in school, then we had to imagine the character favourite food then eat it in the way they would this was to show that in full understand my character an not think about me the actors life my character favourite food was pasta so I imagine that I was eating spaghetti Bolognese. to finish this activity we had to think of any bed time ritual's that they might do and I did this by being on my knees and praying but I had decide what I was praying too.

After that I worked on how the character specks so with what accent and on how they pronounce word as my character was from Liverpool I did a liverpudlian accent I had to work on how someone from Liverpool would talk and present that in my character. once this was one I had to present my character to the class this part I struggle with as I wasn't very confident in what I was doing as I kept on saying "yeah" like I didn't know anything about this character and I struggle to find the meat of the character background and I kept on losing the accent, at this stage I could say that this character wasn't going to work as the character was put in to a scene with other characters and my character stood out as the one who had no purpose of being there even though the character were placed together by how they felt right for each other as in my scene was more focused on the other character it was more clear to me that I needed to think of a new character to work on.

To help find a new character when a we found a sound for my character it was clear there was no physical stereotypical evil  character as the thunder maker made that clear to me at the start the sound work in a father/daughter relationship as the deep sound was for the convocation but the sound needed to developed to have some physical movement within the piece.

That when I came up with a new character.
Name: Lord
Age: Unknown
Background: He is a villain which is stereotypically bad at what he is doing as he is always out to make money and to do this he like to steal priceless items to make the money he likes the more rarer the item/thing the better but he always seems to fall or his plan just falls as some catches him in the act and stops him.

As Homework was to think of a situation that could get all the character involved in

the character are
Joyce
Mike
Shellier
Maddinson
Chloe
Lord
Terry

Tuesday 1st October 2013

the situation that I created was a bit like willy Wonka as it was set around a factor tour as the lord is after money again and he was to steel make a talking kangaroo.
after everyone told their ideas we start to work on them to see which once could work to start of we use Amelia's idea of an airport then we tried out the an wizard of Oz ideas.

The Airport
the plot of the situation is due to serve weather the flight that the character were supposed go on was cancelled and power cut took out the whole airport and the character are trapped for days.

the scene starts out in security with Mike, shellier and Maddinson walking though the search with Lord disguised as a security office trying to steel Mike at some point as Mike walk though the metal detection arch Mike sets it off with the security office searching him as she find something Mike start to have a disagreement with the officer with shellier helping him after they leave the security officer starts talking to Lord ask where Dave is but Lord answer with he's ill and she believe him, the scene then changes to the departures lounge where the character start to talk about each other but then thing changes when there is a announcements saying the flight there are on is cancelled. the only problem that we could have with this idea is that it could be to complicated for a young audience and it is to true to a real airport also it can be a bit misleading as the story was telling the audience no to trust security officers the plot line would be easy for an adult to understand but maybe not a children

The wizard of Oz idea.
When trying out this idea we explored it in a different way to the airport idea this time we had a normal head on stage where we sat on the outside of the stage and the rule was that there was only to be four character on stage at anytime also we was allowed to come on when we felt that our character was need, at the start we followed the story of the wizard of oz but changing it to the wizard of oaws also we did it as the character came on in order, the plot of the story was to follow the road to find out why the character arrived there towards the end we meet the good character telling the character Josie sheila, Mike, Madison where they could find The Lord, I didn't take much part of the story as I felt that my character wasn't need yet but if I could do it again I would bring him on more earlier at the start, I felt that is story worked more then the airport idea as kid could understand it more but if we did this idea we would need to take some of the searing and reference out so it is more suitable for an young audience.

Tuesday 8th October 2013

objectives - To create a new character and to create a story for the actor to become the character.

Before we created e character we tired a few of Augesto Boal ( who estibalshied forum theatre) warm up game which help wake up the imagination.

The first game that we tried was the Vampire game this game involved using our ears more then an eyes as this game was in hep the dark and we had to use our knowledge of each other to guess which person was screaming when the vampire bites them, this game was fun and interesting as at some points we couldn't tell who was the person screaming.

The next game we played was Find The Game this game involved the use of our eye to find the game as there was no leader of the game so we had to notice what other people were playing to understand the game this game was fun and easy to pick up as it didn't need some one to start the game as long as others notice then it didn't matter what the game was.

The following game that we played was the ball game this game involve us to catch a ball with dropping it if we dropped the ball we were out this game showed our need to think about ourselves then other as we were more concentration on staying in the game and getting other out this game was fun but it started to go one side we one person start to get people out on perpose.

The last game we played was a clown excerise called I loved you this game was intersecting how we explored a character by using our body instead of voices as a certain body part would lead movement close to your partner, this game was challenging to see how we could used a  body part would lead.

Once we did the warm up game we had to think about our character and how we would describe what they look liked how they would speak and how they would move also we had to think about there story.

My character called the count who was a confused trapped vampire who was trapped by a whitch I presented the story by acting as myself then lowering my body level to the floor to so that I was in a coffin then get out of the coffin and walk around the room also I talked with a Western European accent to represent Transylvania.

Tom - character name Charlie ( Footballer) plays for QPR and during an important match miss a important goal.

Amelia - character name Jasmin (Fairy tale princess) she was walking in the woods when she was captured by an orgor.

Ryan Y - character name Pierrot (clown) (this character is real life character and Ryan did research in to the character) he is heart broken as the love of his life ran of with someone else.

Kat -Character name Sisi ( Girly/girl) she has a twin sister called madinson a she also has a thing for Walter the handy man as she always invites him over to fix something for her.

Tasha - character name Millie (alien) she was sent to earth to study humans as goes in an old peoples home and wasn't sure what she report back about them.

Final Idea
For the first scene we created we had all the character Sisi, Jess, Peirrot, Josie, Charlie and Jasmine all on different level with Jess, Peirrot and Jasmine on chairs, Josie asleep on the floor and Sisi and Charlie Standing up then to have a mystry phone call telling them that they have won a dream holiday to paradise Island the voice at the end of the phone was the Count telling to "press one to accept or two to decline" every accepted then scene change to a bus with all the character apart from the Count and Josie this time being replace by Walter the handy man driving the bus to the hotel on the island during this the audience finds out that Jasmine is a princess when she falls in to Peirrot which he regionises her and she ask him to keep it quite with Charlie listening in to what they are saying, then the convostation is broken up when Walter phone start ring to find out it is Josie telling every one via loudspeaker that she is not on the bus and she will meet everyone at the hotel and asking for someone to get a Pina Calada, The scene then changes to change to the hotel with the character interacting talking about each other with Jess saying about the heat and where is from and asking about the man in the painting then moving on to Jasmine and Charlie asking about what each other do and Charlie tells about his dream to own a hotel like the one that the play is set in and finally Josie and Peirrot Josie has coming in late and take Peirrot Pina Calada and starts to drink it she then asks him "why the long face" and Peirrot explain that he met the love of his life then the whole scene freeze with the Count talking to each of the character though their mind as he says one named the character come back to life. For each character I said "Peirrot why the long face? is time running out for your love", Jasmine "why hide who you are? when you have royal blood running though your veins", "Charlie I need to speak to you, you know the place", "Jess you say you are committed to world peace but what does peace get you in this world", "Josie late again I see trust me time isn't always your friend" and "Sisi you mist a spot" after this the characters all come unfrozen and talk to each other asking what had just happen that is where we had finished for that lesson.
Tuesday 5th November 2013
During this lesson we looked at the scene where we could introduce the Count in to the mix after the characters talk about what had happen with the voices in their heads, we decided that there would be load entrance music then the Count would enter and saying "congraulations and welcome to Paradise Island Grand Hotel, I hope you journey was a safe one" then the count went on about the dinner party telling the guest what time they need to be at the party, once I had spoken to all the characters and got their agreement I leave stage left to let the rest of the characters to talk about the Count then the Count interrupts the convocation again but this time is talking to Sisi from of stage telling her to so the guest to their rooms, the scene end when Charlie follows the rest of the character then turns and walk to stage left going to meet the Count.

The scene changes from the reception to the dungeon with dropping water Charlie is standing front centre stage with the Count appearing behind him giving Charlie a surprise, the Charlie asks the Count "why do we always have to meet down here" the  Count replies with "you know why I can't go outside I have farglie skin I will burn" the problem we had with this scene was that we couldn't thin what we could do with it and what we could say as we were to start with going with the follow see what works the re going over it adding new bits. We continue with the Count asking " Is everything going to plan" with Charlie replying "all the guests have arrived but there might be a slight problem" with the Count asking "what" then Charlie breaks the news to the Count of Peirrot might have fallen in love with the princess Jasmine the fureous Count replays with "How could this happen, this must be stopped right away, ohh I have an idea tonight at the party you must put something in Peirrot drink and I will get Walter to tidy him away" as the Count mentions Walters name Walter bursts into the room and the Count has to quickly changes subject about the leaky pipe in the corner.

The Count and Charlie moved to the back of the stage so Walter couldn't hear what they were talking about, Charlie mention to the Count that you cant put something in Peirrot drink which leads to the Count changing his idea to his dark magic which Charlie also points out that he cant do that as it mess with their heads an angry Count reply "I pay you to make my decision for me just make sure you are at the party" Charlie leaves the Count go over to talks to Walter asking about what room he had put Jasmine in and also telling him that the pipe he is fixing has been driving him made for the last 100 years, to end the scene we focused on audience interaction by asking a member of the audience to come up and help Walter fix the pipe.

Ideas for the next scene after the count and Charlie have meet in the dungeon.

The count could go and find the princess in the room that Walter said she was in and start talking to her reducing her to him.

The count could be in his study planning what he is going to do to Pierrot to make him feel worthless and that the princess don't love him.

The princess is getting ready for the dinner and Josie comes into her room to talk to her about Pierrot and discovers that the count was listen in.

At the dinner table the count decides to start playing with Pierrot mind but as Pierrot is the only person who can hear the count as the others around Pierrot look frozen then once the count has stop talking to him though his mind everyone comes unfrozen and pierrot leaves the room claiming he feels unwell.

Other peoples ideas for next scene.....

Amelia
Every one finds out what is going on with the princess and what the count is up to though the use of Chinese whispers as no one the right story as the story changes every time it is pass on.

Sasha
Walter finds out what the count is really up to an decides to warn the princess about what he has heard and tries to tell her to get out whilst she can.

Tasha
After the dinner party the princess has been kidnapped and the group splits in to two and looks around the castle trying to find the princess, Pierrot finds the princes in the dungeons of the castle but he doesn't know that Charlie is watching him. Charlie redeems himself but helping the princess to escape and takes the princess and becomes Walter apprentices.

Tom
Charlie begins to question himself out loud if he should go though with the kidnapping of the princess.

Kat
everyone is getting ready for the dinner party to music.

Ryan Y
the count put a truth posion in Pierrot drink and he starts to telling the truth that jasmine is a princess and also he tell her that he loves her.

Tuesday 12th November 2013
The dialogue that my character the count might say at the dinner party scene.

"Good evening everyone I hope you like your room."
"You all look very hungry do it up"
"I don't eat you see"
"Pierrot" ( is a creepy voice as I am talking to him in his mind.)
"Pierrot"
" she doesn't love you pierrot"
She hates the way your look at her"
" I can tell you this as it's all in her thoughts, she wants someone better then you"

the script for the dinner party scene.
once the count has given the five names to five member of the audience.

count: Right I where to put my guest for tonight in the right seats so I can keep an eye on the, right who has Josie, right come up, come up, Josie, Josie, Josie that always late girl I will put her here next to me so I can keep an eye on her in case she doesn't run of. thank you of you go now.

count: now who has Jess, come on up, come on. Jess, Jess, Jess that vegintrain I know I will order her stake for her dinner tonight and I will seat her here where as she is no harm to me. thank you, you can sit down now.

count: now who has Charlie my right hand man, right do come up do come up, well I don't need to keep eye on him I will sit him here, thank you for you help off you go.

count: who has Jasmine ahh beautiful Jasmine, come on up come on up I will put her right next to me where I always have an eye on her where she cant resits me. thanks you can sit down now.

count: last that clown Pierrot who has that clown Pierrot. do come up, do come up. I will put him here where I can keep an eye on him but he is not next to the princess. thanks you for your help off you go now,

After creating some ideas lines we worked on creating the dinner part scene so we work on the table layout on where every character should sit, we decide to have no table and no food or drink glass we had to image the table was there. From this scene Kat had decide to change her character from the cowgirl Maddison to the servant girl Sisi. For the start of this scene we hope to use the audience members to help the count place the names at the right seats that he wanted his guest to be at, one that had been done one at a time the guest would enter starting with Josie introducing her self with the count shaking her hand followed by Jess one them two characters had sat down jasmine enter and sits in the wrong sit the count explains that to a moves her to her right sit, the last characters to enter is peirrot and Charlie, although the scene the count is trying to impress the jasmine and sound better then peirrot, all the way thought the count is getting angry as what he is trying is not working so he freeze the scene leaving him and Charlie unfrozen and talks how can they stop jasmine falling in love with peirrot the idea was that Charlie would take peirrot up to the library and showing him the some Shakespeare and the count give Jasmine a love potion and unfreezes the scene which leads to jasmine not taking the potion as she claims to have a headache the angry count decides to help jasmine and takes her to her room and tells Peirrot about the Shakespeare.

The scene ends with the Count, Jasmine, Peirrot and Charlie leaving the room and leaving Josie and Jess on stage with Sisi with Josie and Jess asking Sisi about the Count on what is he like as a boss.

Tuesday 26th November 2013
During this lesson we had to add a new character in a Natalia had join the course so to add to plot twist to what we have already got we added a hotel inspector Miss Helsing who was also a vampire slayer the first character she meets is Walter as at the start of the scene Walter is seen cleaning the dinner room from the mess left from dinner and decide to have a smell of the drink that had the love potion in it he describes it to the audience and has a taste that when Miss Hellining enters and Walter falls in love with her, after that Sisi enters looking for Walter and tells Walter about the Hotel Inspector is coming a give him a list of jobs that need to be done but as Walter is leaving he says "goodbye inspector" which makes Sisi realise that Miss Helsing is the hotel inspector and tells her to wait in the dinner room as she goes and get the owner the Count.

Tuesday 3rd December

During this lesson we looked at creating the next few scene starting by adding more in to the scene that we had create last week but this adding Charlie to the mix with Charlie walking behind where Miss Hellining was siting with keys in his hand as he had just lock Peirrot in the library, Charlie decides then to go up to Miss Helsing and she start to talk to him as well as checking him to see if he is a live giving hints to the audience that she is a vampire slayer as she was doing this before by taking a stake out of her box but she is checking Charlie for bite marks, after she has done this she starts to get the truth out of him by the means of Charlie mistakes when she asks him "where the owner" after Miss Helsing finds out that Jasmine is a princess she start to question Charlie though asking him if he believes in good and evil at the end of this scene Charlie decides to change sides from the evil to good as tells Miss Helsing that he locked Peirrot in the library.

The following the starts with Peirrot trapped in the library reading Shakespeare then get bored of reading it and decides to change book and finds a Sherlock Holms booking telling him that Sherlock is trapped in a library like he is and find a book which leads him to a secrete passageway which leads to Peirrot looks for the this and finds the book a series of unfortunate events when make the physcail theatre book case made up of Tasha, Amelia, Sasha and Kat to open, Peirrot asks the audience if he should say of go and then decides to go which then enters Charlie and Miss Helsing looking for Peirrot but find the room empty Charlie leans on the bookcase and falls in the secret room with out Miss Helsing noticing, after Miss Helsing notice that Charlie has gone.

Then we moved on the next scene in the bed room with Josie and Jess talking over the phone talking about the fact that Jasmine is still missing and that they need to find her, we created the scene with the two character in small room trying to find Jasmine under Josie stuff to add more fun for the audience we had Sisi hiding in Josie suitcase and Peirrot hiding under a blanket until Josie and Jess find them and ask them what they were doing and Peirrot explaining that he was trapped in the library and that he found a secret passage way, we ended the scene with Jasmine screaming and Josie, Jess, Sisi and Peirrot running after it.

From this lesson I believe that we have nearly finished the whole performance and now need to create the last couple of scenes and the ending with the adding of Natalia it has add a scene of mystery to the mixed as it has added more twists on to a strange story.

 Tuesday 10th December 2013
During today lesson we went thought what we had already created and try to polish off some scene such as the bedroom scene on how we were going to enter the scene and get the right spot when we were the other side of the stage, we were all giving a line to say when entering apart from the Count is a painting in that scene moving to the music. we also polished off the scene when Miss Helsing enter and talks to Charlie as well as looking the Library scene with this scene we looked what books would Peirrot be looking at and the book that would open the book case as well as working on the part when Miss Helsing and Charlie enter looking for Peirrot and when Charlie vanishes.

Once we did this we went though the whole piece so far and added the music so we could work on the transition between scene and also looking at what other sounds we needed.

Music added
Scene 1 - Phone ringing and "Living La Vida Loca"
Scene 2 - Bus sounds and Phone ringing and  "Pina Calada"
Scene 3 -  Holiday Music and Mind control music
Scene 4 - Water dripping
Scene 5 -  Jump on it
Scene 6 - Dinner music
Scene 7 - Love potion and door belling and raining
Scene 8 - N/A
Scene 9 - N/A
Scene 10 - Searching music and  chase music
Scene 11 - Water dripping
Scene 12 - Jump on it

Other sounds that we are planning to used will be done by the actor.

Monday 16th December

All day we work and developed the piece by adding in the final scene and going though whole performance from beginning to end, we started off from where we had finished the lesson before which was the library we looked at the next scene which was the bedroom scene where Josie cant find Jasmine and phone Jess who is in the room next door for help and comes up with three other problems Jess decides to go into Josie room to help her find Jasmine as Jess suggested that Jasmine could be under Josie stuff, the pair of them search the room to find Sisi and Peirrot under the clothes to make it fun for the audience we decide that Sisi and Peirrot should enter when Josie is on the phone so the audience go interact even though Josie doesn't notice, the scene end with Jasmine screaming and Josie, Jess, Sisi and Peirrot run out looking for her.

The next Scene that we created starts with the Count having Jasmine over his shoulder and Jasmine screaming and shouting for him to put her down to make it funny to the audience we decide that the Count would put Jasmine down and be out of breath which Jasmine saying "I'm not that heavy" and "you done yet" once the Count get his breath back he lifts Jasmine up again and over his shoulder and she continues to scream and shout until the Count says "would you Shhh" and place Jasmine into a chair and they both freeze, the scene then goes on to Josie, Jess, Sisi and Peirrot running around the castle trying to find the Count and Jasmine they later bumping into Miss Helsing who explains to them about the Count being a vampire and Jasmine being a Princess but they don't believe what Miss Helsing is saying and ask her "how do you know so much" Miss Helsing then goes on to explain that she is a vampire slayer,

The final tow scene then go on to the Count thinking that he has Jasmine alone and is about to bit her that is when everyone else bursts in as well as Charlie the Count asks Charlie "where the Hell have you been" Charlie later goes on to introduce Miss Helsing to the Count to make this scene more fun for the audience we decided to have Miss Helsing swing her hair around and have Josie, Jess, Sisi, Peirrot and Jasmine say "wow she worth it" like the L'Oreal adverts. The Count and Miss Helsing are about to have a flight then Charlie breaks them up and suggests to Miss Helsing that there must be another way Miss Helsing looks in her books and decides to punish the Count with 100 year work experiences with Walter the scene with the Count being taken off with Walter and Peirrot tells Jasmine about his love for her.

To end the whole piece off after the first bow to the audience we decided to dance to Jump on it do two rounds of the dance moves then bow again and walk off to fully end the piece.

From today lesson it felt great to finally finish the piece and just continue polishing off every scene and work on the transition for the final end performance.

Evaluation
Monday 20th January 2014 we finally performance our story of "Paradise Island" to two primary school in the local area both the same age. To get to this performance we had to do a lot of research, selecting and refine different and suitable ideas for children we did this though different mean by experimenting with different ideas such as the airport and wizard of Ox theme idea as well as doing the same for our character when we created them using a mirror describe the character to ourselves as well as creating a scene and story on their background.

To get to this stage we did a lot of researching different themes and topics that we could use and share a message though a story which we started to create ourselves we create the story though devising by just improvising a scene and seeing if this worked we did the same for some of the character by experimenting the possibility's are endless there is not right from wrong and we could see which character worked with certain scenes but to do this we had to research different source material which started from the characters this was by Michael lee when we were creating the characters.

Once we where able to select a suitable audience years 5 and 6 we started to devise and shape the scene and character to make the story follow but before we could get to this stage we had to think of a background to the character and why would they go to the place Paradise Island by researching different themes and topic we were able to create the message of the piece and create the story behind it the main message of the piece was Stanger danger and we use a range of story technique to create the story by doing a workshop on playing with narrative by using a well known nursery rhyme and present it in three different ways to have an understanding that a narrative doesn't just have to be presented by words.

During the rehearsals stage we explored and experimented the ideas by creating the scene then editing the part we didn't like out then re running though and adding more to make scene work for the real performance for example of this would be the dinner scene where we had to cut down the original scene as it was too long and took the energy away from the second have of the performance to a shorten and more simple scene which got to the point and didn't drag on but to help with the performance and to make it more fun and engaging for the audience we used a lot of audience interaction to make the tale more fun for the audience by getting them up on stage a main example was the dinner scene when I the Count asked for volunteers to help placed my guest at the table by give member of the audience names and asking them to come up and help.

When doing this scene and comparing it with in the two performance the two different audience reacted in different way with the first audience be shy and encage with the story but when we asked them a question they didn't shout it out they just put their hands up compared with the second audience there was more of a connection with the audience as there we more encage and more involved with the piece when we asked them for help they wanted to help which added to the fun of the story. But both audience asked questions at the end of the performance which so their enthusiasm to the piece more asking why did we choose acting? and with others asking how we got the characters and the story line which shows that the audience enjoyed the piece.

Overall from the first idea though to the final performance the whole product was challenging when trying to make the story that follows and getting everyone to sing of the same song sheet but working together and using everyone ideas and strengths to pull off a story that had a message imbedded that was full of fun and laughter took time and effort from everyone by going from ideas that didn't work well on its own and need something else to a full idea working with the help of improvisation.

Drama Improvisation

Drama Improvisation

Monday 9th September 2013

why do we used improvisation?
  • to come up with a new routine or scene on the spot without any rehearsals.
  • to come up with your own characterisation of a character on the spot.
  • quick thinking when needed.
  • cover up any mistake during a performance.
  • increase confidants for the actor.
  • adapt to different roles quicker with out knowing anything about the character.

ways we use Drama Improvisation.

we can use improvisation though different techniques like.....
  • hot seating
  • thought track
  • A and B game
  • Thank you very much game.

Non Audience Activity

To complete this task which include a range of activities where the actor is painting with music, with this task our minds explored the different colours and emotions that the music brought to mind and reflect it within painting a box that we the actor created with our imagination,
But during the 4 piece of music that we listen to song 1 and 3 link with colours and emotion with extra emotion being added and song 2 and 4 linking with the colour and emotion being link in together but as the second song was added the colour that I added wasn't for the background colour it was for the patterns that represented that emotion.
  • Song One brought the colour of RED to mind as the music portrayed the emotion of anger and death in mind with tempo being fast and slow which my body can explore with different body parts to explore emotion thought the movement,as the music made me feel fear or anger and death the colour red as red connotes the colour of blood and the music made me feel that blood had been spilled.

  • Song Two brought the colour of GREEN to mind as the music emotion had changed for the anger to more or a joyful and more happy tempo which allowed me to explore my body movement to be more light and calm and not to be as tense as before, as music made me feel more joyful the colour green came to mind as the music sounded a bit like Italian with makes think of the colour green as it is on Italy's flag also that green is a colour that makes people feel bright which help me to feel more relax.

  •  Song Three links into Song one as the music brought the colour Black to mind with the emotion be mischievous coming with the pattern being straight sharp lines to represent the mischief as the music made think of the colour black it made me feel mischievous as anything can hide with shadows that black can create, to show this mischievous my body movement had to be sharp quick movement to show that my arms had a mind of their own and didn't want to listen to anything else.

  • Song Four links into Song two as the music added an emotion that could have been felt during song two which the music brought the colour white to mind with the emotion being peace with the white being known for the colour the represent that peace by being a calm pure colour that cant be ruined, the pattern that came to mind was a circle of all size as a circle can contain and hold the peace and not let it escape as a circle can not be broken, to show the peace my body movement had to be calm, relaxed and I had to move my body in a soft way also to help with this emotion and colour the music was a song that I recognised which help me to explore the emotion.

By using more movement and experimenting with our bodies you can create the environment for the audience to visualise and fill the stage by inhabiting the environment you are saving yourself from spoon feed the audience by telling them what you are doing and leaving them the figure what your are doing though the movement.

Painting the fence

By using our own knowledge of a fence we could work together as a team to choose the colour and the physicality of the fence without communicating to each other, we used naturalistic gestures to communicate as if one person did a certain movement e.g. using a paint brush then the rest would follow, also by painting the fence to the tempo and the beat of the music it helped to show the physicality of this fence.

The Prisoner
To complete this task we had to imagine that we where in two situation one in a prison cell which is slowly flooding with water and the other situation where we are being chased a monster down an endless tunnel trying to find a way out, the sension that felt the worst to being in was the prison cell because you had that fear that something was going to happen to you that someone is going to kill you or your going to die of natural causes but the fear of death was the emotion I was scared of as I related the flooding water with the fear of drowning from the film "Titanic" where people drown as there were trapped but by referring this situation to film makes the situation feel more of a reality as we can watch it happen on screen but it felt more real think that I was in the same situation, with the second situation of being chase by a monster down a long never ending tunnel with different levels of low and high also different settings within the tunnel, overall I felt that the first exercise felt more real then the second as I feel more like I was trapped in the prison fearing more my life then in the tunnel when you are you are one step a head of the monster who is chasing you but as the first exercise I could relate what I was imaging to a film but the second one I couldn't so relating the situation to a film did help make the exercise more of a reality.

Spontaneity

Spontaneity games Part 1

How does it feel to input and except idea's?
I didn't find it hard to input ideas to a piece of work or excepting other peoples ideas as your own ideas can help out other people if they cant think of anything on the spot the "what if questions" it was hard to think of a answer for the question that I was given on the spot but expect what other people was suggesting help me to come up with an answer this worked for other people when I suggested thing for them which helped them to come up with there own answer, However the "would you rather" objects to excepting other peoples ideas as it what you have decide what I want not what other people think of you, "making shape" this exercise did let you except other people ideas as mainly one person took control of each shape but they let other peoples ideas help in to create the final shape and the last exercise "rush hour traffic" this except other peoples ideas as well as my own to create a town with our bags and shoes but this exercise also put someone trust in you when I was driving someone around this town who cant see so they have to trust to you don't crash them into to anything which was the same for the person who was driving you around as I had to put my trust in them. overall  found the activities and easy and challenging at the same time as with some activities it easy to come up with your answer or ideas but with other someone else idea change you ideas and change your mind to what you original thought.

Spontaneity games part 2

This time to complete the task we played different games still focusing on expecting other people ideas  but also how forth coming was I with ideas as the first game we played was "excepting circle" this included when some start a movement with a sound and the next person along has to copy the exactly what person before did this was a bit like Chinese  whispers in this game I was really expecting other peoples idea's as I change the movement at some point and at some point adding some extra as if I laugh it had to be added to the movement at nearly every turn the movement and the sound was changed as we had all seen the start of movement and we trying to copy what we had seen at the start not what the person before us was doing which was diffing the rules of the games as we weren't copy what the person before was doing and that I also had change the movement at some points, so I could conclude for this game that I was focused at all time to improve this I would have more focus and try not to laugh as much during the exercise,
then we moved on the "bag on objects" this game was the one game were i was more expecting and forth coming with ideas as i could see what objects have been use and which ones hadn't so to start i choose the objects that hadn't been use then i move on to the objects that had and i tried not to copy what other people had done for that certain object, this task was the one I found more easier and I was abkle to keep focused more. then we moved on to the game "yes lets" this games was more about excepting other peoples ideas as we had to listen to what someone said then do what they have said, in this game I was more excepting other people ideas as I tried to do the movement that they have said but at some points I didn't know what I could do for other ideas but also I forth coming with ideas I came up with an air hostess and a news reader which other people were excepting off if I could do this games again I would try to add more ideas in as well as not trying to laugh as much and more go with the flow of the game. the next game that we did was "freeze" as this game was more focus on excepting other ideas as you could freeze the scene at any point and you  would enter it but you had to change the idea of the scene into a new scene this was more fun to play as the other person in the scene had to go along with the idea that you had brought in to the scene but they couldn't change it themselves during this game I gave the ideas of the an X Factor judge asking why so I keep someone on the show then when Amelia said freeze the scene change and I was excepting her idea of a couple having an argument which ended with me pulling a gun out on her when the   next time around I did Jeremy Kyle by giving a lie detector results to someone and then asking why they had lied in this exercise I could have been more focus by trying not to laugh when I was on stage. the final game was "who line is it" were we write down a line and we have to start and finish with someone else line also we had to come up with a character as two different group we each had a line and character we then had to decide which line starts and end the scene my character was the joker and I had to end line "I wonder why I get the blame" in this exercise I have could have giving more ideas on where to stage the scene and what other characters could do but during this I was fully excepting of other people ideas.

Sit, stand , lie
This activity involved us to think about character aswell and keeping eye contact with each other as if some change their potion from standing to sitting then the person who was sitting had to stand I found this activity fun and challenging as I had to think on the spot what my character would've and think of a different story every time I was in the center aswell as keeping eye contact on the other people so if the change I would change also I found it hard to stay in character and try not to laugh at so meeting that was funny when I was in the center. The parts that I found fun was the different scene that was create that was interesting as we were in different setting each time with different character that was interesting to play.

Park bench
This actnvity involved the character that we had already created this involved two people on a park bench entering as there character I found this activity fun and interesting as the character could
go away with their stories and ideas as there was no boundaries and the topic if each character change when there enter and the range of character was that was played was interesting, out of the row character I played I found the news report more fun to play then the local council member getting a view of the area I found the news reporter more fun ans he was asking a women that he had already ask before questions as she had got on his nerves and he didn't like the way the women kept on asking question about him at the end it involved the women leaving I found this challenging aswell to play as I didn't always stay in character if I could do this task again I would try to stay in character more and add another layer to the character.

Why do actors study movement?

As the actor can used the movement that they have studied in their own performances though body languages and take on a character thoug the uses of full mirror.

How does this link to drama improv?
This links to drama improv as the movement that has been studied can be use on the spot when improving a character or a scene.

Has your opinin changed on why an actor study movement Changed after reading the article?
My opinin has changed after reading the article as the article was saying about as an actor you have to lose your own habits to become the character that you inten to become so the movement helps loses those habits.

Lecog

7 levels of tension
0 - No Tension
1 - Exhasusted (collapse)
2 - Layed back (Sunday afternoon)
3 - Netural (No emotion)
4 - Moving with purpose (yes/no)
5 -Surpence
6 - Realisation
7- Total Tension

Vianegative - not telling his students what's right or wrong and letting them physically feel.

What habits did you have to break to be Netural?i
The habits I had to break to be Netural was to keep my face straight and have no emotion in my face lasso the other habits I had to break was stand up right with my shoulders back which before i wasn't doing I was slouched back with my shoulders down.

Were there any levels that was hard and easy to change for and why?
I found the level 0 the hardest level as I found it hard to have no tension with in my body and my facial when having no tension I found this hard because I struggle to hold the no tension with my shoulders backs and having no expression on my face and not laughing at anyone in the room, the level I found easy was level 5 I found this easy because I could show the facial expression of I am not sure what I am hear and moving around with showly and having caution in every step.

1- lejue - play fullness
2- complicite - togetherness
3- disponsibility - openness.

Fairy tales to create ingredients for improv
The strengths of my performance was this I showed the character clearly though my body language and I thinking on the spot and have a dramatic ending my weakness was I kept changing my accent when playing the character of the beast if could do this again I would keep to one accent not change it and try to focus more on the characterisation.

On the spot storytelling with a giving stimulis.
The stimulis I was giving was CDs  my strengths were keeping the audience engage whilst explaining why I love CDs also I was able to very my tone this helped me to keep the audience engage my weakness for the performance was trying to keep going as I ran out of ideas I could talk about on CDs also I didn't have much eye contract with my audience at some points I made some eye contact with the audience.

Do you think you have masted the skills of story telling and what did you prefer?
I think I have mastered the skill of storytelling as I was able to think of a story on the spot with the given stimuli also with the fairy tell ingredients I felt that I have mastered telling a story on the spot with giving lines I think I have mastered this because I was able to think on the spot with and I
was trying to make the story interesting for the audience, out of the two storytelling techniques that we use I preferred the on the spot storytelling with given stimulus as I could go anyway with it within the given topic and that I didn't have to say any lines if I could do that again I would hope for a better topic to talk about so I could talk for longer then I did which wasn't to bad of 1 minutes 24 seconds.

Dramatic tension.

what is dramatic tension?

dramatic tension is a technique that is design to keep the audience encage and making them think about what they are seeing by taking the audience to the edge of their seats this happen when tension has build up top its peak, the effects of tension are used in film, Television, Musicals and Plays.

How is tension created?

  • Exaggeration - when a something has happen in the plotline of the media.
  • Marking the Moment - when something has happen and the actor has come out of the scene to explain  what the character is feeling.
  •  Lighting/Music/ Sound Effects- when these are use these help to build up the tension this makes the audience feel more tense as they know something is going to happen but they don't know what.
  • Facial Expression - when the actor use there facial expression to show the emotion to audience which helps the audience feel more tense when don't know what the actor is seeing.
  • body language - when an actor moves in a certain way to show an emotion to the audience helps build the tension within the audience when they don't know why they are moving in that way.
  • Vocal - this involves the use of pitch, volume and tone these are use to help build tension within the audience but also used to encage the audience by keeping them interested in the storyline.
  •  Long pause/Dramatic pause - these are used to show thing mainly bad has happen and the actor want the audience to reflect on what's happen with the pause this also helps build tension when something worst could happen.
  • Descriptive and Emotional words- this help by playing the audience sense and emotion by telling the audience that it was a cold room the audience feel cold also when telling the audience that a character is sad plays with the audience emotion and the audience becomes sad along with the character.
why is dramatic tension used in storytelling?
I believe that dramatic tension is used in storytelling to keep the audience interested and encage with the story that the actors are telling them also dramatic tension is also used in storytelling to make the audience think about what they have just seen.

Monday 25th November

we recapped on the past  7 weeks to see what we could remember to get ready for the weekly assessments.

We all took at certain week and wrote what we could remember I was giving week 7 of storytelling, after we went though each one as a class to see what we might have missed.

we were then given a task to create prepared improve that includes some of  techniqes that we had learnt from the 7 weeks.

Me and Kat worked together to create a dramatic piece of a husband losing his wife to cancer and he kidnapped the doctor trying to get him to save his wife but there was no luck we made it dramatic by using  silence and dramatic pauses and verying the tone of voice.

Monday 2nd December 2013

Assessment 1

 Image stimulus

To complete this assessment we were given three of Roy Lickenstein pop art and we had to create a piece of improv from the three images.

the three images

From these image I worked with Sasha, Kat and Tom and we create a scene that involve a married couple arguing  then crossing cut to the past when the couple that was happy but change to unhappy with the couple not trusting each other, also we show the couples past by using cross cutting in the first cross cut we showed when then couple first meet to make the scene look more effective every time the scene switch to the past the couple argue about something else until the car crash at the end of the scene.

The techniques that we used was dramatic pause to build tension with the help of long pauses also we used cross cutting to show the different time period when me and Kat were talking Tom and Sasha were frozen then after a key word me and Kat froze and Tom and Sasha come unfrozen every time as the scene went on me and Kat tone and pitch change as the more angry the character got the louder our voice got till they couldn't go anything further, also we used slow motion to show the car crash scene with the couple falling slowly out of the car on to the floor in a dead position but to show to the audience that they were a couple me and Kat had one hand touching the others.

The strengths of the performance was that we use planned improv well we knew what we were doing and we had a understand of what improv techniques we were going to use and we came up with different ideas for each of the images, the weakness we had was that we did try to over plan what we could do for the piece then trying the ideas we had and seeing which one worked well and which one that didn't.

Monday 9th December 2013

Assessment 2

Audio stimulus

To complete this assessment we listen to the song "I don't like Monday" by Boomtown Rats. From the song we had to crate a scene from the music.

From the song I worked with Sasha, Kat and Tom and we looked at the idea of a zombie apocalypse to start of with we looked at two survivors trapped in a room with the dead entering from different aganal with me and Kat trying to defend our selves whilst Tom and Sasha was playing the zombies then we decide to add to the scene by adding a part where Kat character becomes a zombie which leave me to defend myself which ends up falling then my character becomes a zombie but we made the character all say "I don't like Monday's", to help make the scene more effective we set the audience in the round to make the scene effective so the Tom and Sasha could enter in different place and that the audience could see my and Kats reaction to the zombie we was all facing all members of the audience.

To give more depth into the story we decide to set the scene like a story by starting with children telling ghosting stories then acting out the story that Tom's child character was telling then finishing the scene with the children screaming.

The techniques that we used for the scene was long pause to show the character reaction and to help build tension for the audience as they have go no clue what could happen next which help to the fear of the scene, also we used a deeper tone of voice when playing the zombies character to show to the audience that we were dead this was also backed up by the use of our movement as we moved our bodies in a way which we thought a zombie would move, to make the scene have more fear we went up to audience members touching, smelling and talking them in a zombie manner which made the audience feel scared as we made the audience feel that they were in a really zombie apocalypse.

The strengths of the performance was we using planned improvisation for the final piece but during the whole rehearsal period we improvised every scene to have an idea of what ideas work and which didn't and seeing it their were parts that we like but need to be change to my the scene work. This time we felt that we didn't over think the scene like we did before in the visual stimulus we had opened up a little but a some points we over plan at the start when we first listen the song when we were think of ideas that would work.

Monday 6th January 2014

Assessment 3

Scripted Stimulus

To complete this assessment we looked at the script called "Sophie" and had to create a scene with the characters from the script, the scene had to be about one of the theme that we found by reading the script.

I work with Natalia and from the script we thought that the character Sophie has voice in her head or a demon so we create a scene starting the line "I don't care"  with Natalia  who played Sophie mining the line then lowing her body level to the floor and repeating the line "I don't care" but this time she sayed the line with me playing the voice questioning with "why don't you care" and "you should care" and repeating the first line "why don't you care" we portrayed the relationship between Sophie and voice with the voice answering all of Sophie demands but saying "I don't want to leave" or "Why should I?" and " I like it here in your head" also we showed the voice hypnotising her with words saying "you need me" and showing to the audience that Sophie was hypnotised by Natalia saying the line in a hypnotised tone and facial expression and having Sophie back out of the hypnoses by turning her head away and saying "I hate you" we repeated this to show to the audience that the character of Sophie was fighting the voice even though the voice was fight her every demand.

Though the rehearsal process we look at the basic idea with Sophie questioning the voice then we looked at how could we get to the part of Sophie crying at the voice so we took the idea of the voice telling her the jobs that need to be done, I did though saying "why haven't you done this?", why isn't that done" to make more effective to the audience I starting to speed up saying the voice demands until Sophie lost it and said "I don't care" which starts the scene with the voice questioning her on why don't she care, we then thought to end the scene with Sophie shouting "I don't care" then with the voice saying "you never care about me did you" then to end the scene we deicide that Sophie level should rise from the floor to standing then having her facial express looked hypnotised again to show to the audience that the voice was in control not her.

The techniques that we used were tone of voice and body level we achieve this by having the voice have a low evil sound tone of voice making him sound like the devil to make the scene more effective and to make the character of Sophie feel more scared of the voice we also made the voice have more status by making his body level higher then Sophie's as we had Sophie at the start on a chair then she moved to the floor by having Sophie on a lower level it shows to the audience that Sophie has no authority at all that all the authority is with the voice.

The strengths of the performance was we improvise that the start when we were creating the idea but with a mixture of planed improv as we talked about we should do and could do, when presenting the final scene to the audience we improvise some parts of the scene when staying the line as it change every time we did it as well as not including every thing that we had rehearsal. when creating the first idea we struggle to think of something as we didn't understand what we had to do but once we found the theme and understand what we had to do the ideas just followed as time I believe that we didn't over plan what we could do we just went with the what we felt was right.

Monday 17th March 2014

Improvisation Part 3 On The Spot.

This is the final part of Drama Improvisation this part focus on "on the spot" improvisation these task makes you think about changing someone on the spot which out having time to think, these techniques more helps presenters of show as they can quickly do step in and do something if something go wrong.

Forum Theatre

What is Forum Theatre?

Forum Theatre is where there is a scene with something going on and the idea for the audience is work out what is wrong with the scene and say stop the actor stop the scene where stop was say and allow  the audience member that said stop can ether tell the actor what wrong and tell them what needs to change to make scene work or the audience member that said stop can swap with one of the actor that they chose and the scene continues but the new actor in the scene change was created to make the scene to work.

The task that we were set to do was to create different scene that really happen to you or a member of your group where you did something wrong, the two scene idea that we come up with was first Sasha trip to Magaluf with one of her friends had lost her camera and the other scene was from Tom when he and his mate tried to get in a house party. once the two scene was created we present it in front of the other group they could ether say "STOP" or "REWIND" an example is Ryan Y said "STOP" when we presented the tom scene and he swap with Tash who was a bouncers and the scene continue, the other group could use "REWIND" which is where the scene could rewind to part that the other group that they missed. For the other group I said "STOP" for the other group for Kat's scene on a roller coaster I swapped with Ryan Y and I changed the scene by being person that was more scared of the ride.

From this task I found it really fun as there was not right or wrong to a scene you could change to the way that you wanted it to be. I did find the first performance from Ryan Y group confusing to work out what could be changed the make the scene work but I found the second performance easier to find way to change it but it did take a long time to work out what was wrong. The only thing that I found difficult was sometimes working out what could be change before I said "STOP" but apart from that I really enjoyed this task.

QVC Shopping channel task

The task that I was set to do was to pitch a random item that appeared on screen and try to sell to an audience in the style of a presenter from the shopping channel QVC the presentation had to be maximum of 5 minutes long and I had to think in the style of a presenter of QVC, fur this task I had to think of a character who was a presenter and I had to think like a present of a shopping channel I had t use words that would make someone buy the product that I was selling to them and I had to go buy he information that I was giving on screen.

The item that I was selling was a pair of Phillips 3D glasses, within the presentation I had the price and the postage and packaging price as well as key feature of the product and the benefits of the product for someone life.

The skills I use thoughout of the presentation was on the spot skils where I am trying to present something wih no practice or cues to help but the main skill I was using was saving my self as thoughout the task I went blank and I didn't know what to say  so this skill made think what else I could say but one looking at the information but also looking at the way I am presenting the information I am making it intresting to the audience, I am not repeating my self, so using this skill help me save the presentation but using these skill does also link in to did you find the task easy or hard well I found it hard as I said I went blank and didn't know what to say at some points this was because I was under pressure to sell something I didn't know about at all as under pressure you do intended to go blank but as well I felt I wasn't all ways making the presentation intresting to watch but once I had saved myself I was also working on my presentation skils as well.

If I could do this task again I would try not to think about the audience in front of me as I felt during the presentation they making me feel pressurised as I wanted them to think that I am good at presenting but as well I would try to relax more so I would hopeful not go blank and try not to speak to fast as thought my presentation I was speaking to fast so the audience couldn't understand what I am saying and I was trying th use up my time to fast if I slow down so one people can understand me and as well the time will go much quicker.
