Auditions for Actors

Auditions for Actors

In this unit we will look at monologues and techniques to prepare us for auditions that we that we will have for Drama School and University.

This unit will help me find the right the monologue for Auditions we looked at our playing age and I discover mine to be between the ages of 18 year old to 30 years old  so with this it  help me out, I had to find six monologues three contemporary and three classical which I could take with me to an audition but I also need to take in to a count that some of the University/Drama School will give me a choice of monologues that I need to choice from to perform.

The three Contemporary Monologues that i have chosen are....
1. Blue/Orange By Joe Penhall
   The character of Robert

2. Shopping and Fucking By Mark Ravenhill
    The character of Mark

3. Fading Joy By Walter Wykes
    The character of Eddie

The three Classical Monologues that I have chosen are ......

1. As You Like It By William Shakespeare
    The character of Jaques

2.The Casket Comedy By Titus Macclus Plautus
   The character of Alcesimarchus

3. Mr. Paul Pry By Douglas William Jerrold
    The character of Oldbutton

The plot of the play which the monologue has come from and why did I chose this monologue...

                                                  Blue/Orange By Joe Penhall
The play is set in a London psychiatric hospital, an enigmatic patient claims to be the son of an African dictator, a story that becomes unnervingly plausible. Blue/Orange is an incendiary tale of race, madness and a Darwinian power struggle at the heart of a dying National Health Service.
I choose this Monologue when I was reading it in a book it took me attentions as I found it funny and as well I could read the madness of the characters.

Shopping and Fucking By Mark Ravenhill
There are many central Themes that this play talk about which are the sexual violence and what is possible if consumerism supersedes all other moral codes. To this effect everything, including sex, violence and drugs, is reduced to a mere transaction in an age where shopping centres are the new cathedrals of Western consumerism.
Aspects of consumerism and sexuality rampant in popular culture recur throughout the play: drugs, shoplifting, phone sex, prostitution, anal sex, and oral sex in the London department store Harvey Nichols.
I choose this Monologue as I found it different for others that I looked at, but at first it was the title of the play that due me in to want to read it, then once I had read it I found it funny and entertaining and it was some new to try.

     Fading Joy By Walter Wykes
The Play is about a young woman finds herself caught up in the intoxicating world of a smooth-talking salesman. When he flees to escape a mysterious group known only as "The Tall Men," she finds it impossible to go back to her old way of life. Not only has she changed in some inexplicable way, but the landscape itself has taken on a strange and menacing new personality.
I choose this Monologue as when I was reading it just got me more intrested in why was the character on the beech and what he was doing I couldn't stop reading it I just want to find out what the character was doing.

As You Like It By William Shakespeare
The play is set Duchy in France but most of the play takes place in a forest called The Forest of Arden, The Forest region

Voice

Voice

In this assessment I will be focusing on the voice and different techniques to help warm up the voice and help maintain an healthy voice. In this assessment the task is to create a 15 minute warm up as well to keep a vocal diary of the techniques that i have used in any warm up and that I have done at home which I will set targets for my self to achieve.

The 15 minute warm up

The 15 minute warm up has to includes a physical warm up which warms up the body which helps get the blood pumping around the body as well the physical warm up has technique that can work on an actors core also the physical warm helps open up the body up which can help the oxygen get to certain parts of the body.
The 15 minute warm up has the have a vocal warm up which includes techniques that work on a an actor voice such as singing, the dynamic of the voice and range etc all these techniques that we use in a vocal warm up can help an actor when they perform.

This was the check list that we got when planning our own warm up....

  1. Arrive on time - clothes that you are able to move in - and water have plenty of water - this is so you can get in and start you warm up, the clothes when you are giving examples of what you want people to do and the water to help keep the body hydrated and help the voice after you have used it.
  2. plan the warm up though in bullet points, so you can refer to them when delivering the warm up.
  3.  Have an aim of your warm up- So you know what part of the vocals that you are going to focus on.
  4. Think about all the warm ups that you have done- this includes the ones in class so you could use them in your own warm up.
  5. Think about using "Call and Response" - this can help when you are teaching a song to the class if they don't know the words you can give the example and get them to repeat it after you.
  6. Make sure you know what you are talking about and why you are doing it? - there is no point getting the class to do something if you don't know what help it's going to have on their bodies.
  7. Look up physiology and us terminology during the warm up- this will show that you know what part of the body the certain technique is helping.

My plan for my Vocal Warm up

Physical side
  1. Head rollers three times in both direction to relax the body.
  2. shoulder rolls three time one way and three times the other, also a way to relax the body. When do this breath in though the nose and out though the mouth.
  3. Head on chest and slowly fall to the floor and hang there, then using your cord pull your self up then shake it off.
  4. Repeat with your head on chest then hang but this time continue to the floor into the child position to stretch the back then looking up to the sun and finally move into the dieing swan position, use your cord to help you back in to standing with you head the last thing to come up.
  5. In pairs interlock your hands then slowly sit on the floor using each other strengths and weigh ( pairs need to be roughly the same weight) then do the same to get back up to standing, then repeat the same technique again but this time do it back to back once down on the floor try to get back up again.
  6. Stay back to back but this time but slowly one person from the pair start bending there back so the other person feet are of the floor, this is helping to stretch the back.
  7. After the back stretches take it in turns to give each other a massage this is to help relax the body and get blood pumping around the body.
vocal side
Breathing
  1. Open the body up which has been done by the physical warm up the there is oxygen in the body and there is blood pumping around the body as well.
  2. Take a deep breath in through the nose and release the air in the sound of an "S" it doesn't matter the speed or the pitch, repeated three times.
  3. Now to include the voice lay on your back with your weight spread out evenly on the floor and a position that your feel conferable in and have you knee raised, I want you to breath in as normal and make sure that your jaw is relax if not massage the jaw starting from behind the ear all the way round the jaw, then I want you to massage another part of your face that feels tense.
  4. As before do the same breathing exercised but this time I would like you to release on a "Z" sound, it doesn't matter how fast or slow or the pitch, repeat this three times so you can really get a feeling of the voice coming through the body.
  5. stretch out the body by rolling on to your side then on to your knees and using the cord pull your self up with your head the last thing to come up.
  6. Now in pair name your self A and B and all I want you to do is to have a conversation but without words but hum instead in this I want you to change your pitch and add emotion to your humming.
Articulation

  1.  To start stretch your faces make it tight then wide, tight then wide and tight then wide.
  2. lick your tongue around your teeth and mouth.
  3. with your tongue start to make the a "D" sound then a "T" sound and keep repeating and also use range.
  4. to finish with 4 tongue twisters "World Wide Web" , " I scream, you scream, we all scream ice cream", " She said she should Sit" and "Red car, Yellow car"
To finish the warm up with a song which is the Banana Song, in this split the group in the pairs and sing the song in cannon with one pair starting the song.

Evaluation of warm up

Overall when I presented my warm up I feel that it went well it got everyone going but I did find that going last people we tried of doing warm ups but I am happy with the out come, at some point I should have explain more what I wanted people to do as well with the tongue twisters for everyone I got everyone to do in cannon with wasn't working and you couldn't always tell who was starting the cannon, To improve I would use cannon a lot less meaning if I did tongue twisters again I would do cannon with everyone and I would also made some on my instructions more sense so people know what i am asking them to do.

How the voice works?

Your voice comes from your Larynx (the voice box) but to get the sound to come from the voice box air from your lungs and diaphragm which pass through your Larynx which helps make the sound.

How to Keep a healthy voice?
To keep your voice healthy it is clear that you should always warm up the voice before a show or even sing as for an actor damaging your voice isn't good one of the ways that you could damage your voice is shouting.
exercises that you could is breathing, articulation and singing.

To keep my voice healthy I have kept a vocal dairy of all the exercises that I have done to keep my voice healthy, My target was to be able to a sing a song right with my breath control and working on my articulation.

13th May 2014
This was the day of which I lead a group warm up which I focused on breathing exercises and as well articulation, I felt from the this warm up my articulation is improving just as well as my breath control.

14th May 2014
Today I worked more on my breathing as I was walking to the train stations as I was walking I took a deep breath in and then release the breath on an A or an E or an S sound I notice when doing this that I was that I could hold the sound a little longer then before talking another breath.

15th May 2014
Today I started to practise my singing, I practise with the song called "Undo" by Sanna Nielsen, This song was helping me with my breath control as there is a part of the song where the artist holds a note longer, I noticed when singing the song when it got to the part of the long note that I could hold the note but for the same amount of time as the artist could just a few seconds short but with practise I should be able to hold the note.

16th May 2014
Today I worked on articulation for this I started with D and as well a T, articulation is something I need to work on as I don't pronounce word fully, I also did some tongue twisters as well to help with pronunciation I notice whilst doing this exercise that some of my pronunciation was improving but it still needs more work, I ended the warm up with a song called "Children of the universal" by Molly which also help with my breath control.

19th May 2014
Today as I was walking down to the train station I worked on breath control by humming different notes high and low and seeing how long I could hold certain notes, I have noticed that I could hold the low notes longer then the high notice as I am not using as much breath on the low notice but with practise I can work on holding the higher notes for longer.

20th May 2014
Today I worked on articulation as I walked down to the train station I started with some tongue twister to get the tongue going and as well I worked on making D and T and I add a new sound a G sound to get the tongue and month going whilst doing this I have noticed that doing the tongue twister is helping me with my pronunciation.

21st May 2014
Today I worked on my breath control but this time before I left for the train station I laid on my bed so I could be relaxed and my body weight spread out evenly and just took a deep breath in then out I repeated this three times to then move on to breathing in and then releasing on an S sound I kept doing this but the sound change as the sound come from different parts of body, as I did this I noticed the how the sound was different as it came from different parts of my body and also I notice that I didn't seem as out of breath as I sometimes do after doing these sort of exercises.

22nd May 2014
Today I worked on my singing and I was also practised my breath control by working on the same song as last week and seeing if the breathing exercises I have done during the week have helped my breath control so I started to sing undo again and when the artist got to the long notes I tried to see if I could which I could but only just, I have notice that singing the song today that my breath control is improving as I was able to hold note but it still needs a little bit more work so I can fully hold the note and not feel out of breath after.

23rd May 2014
Today I worked on my breathing and articulation by repeating an exercise that I did on 21st May but this time after doing the breathing exercise I did articulation by still laying on the bed but in a slow motion way I practised saying my D's and T's very slowly so you could could hear very letter being said I did this as sometimes when you say the letter fast I am not always saying the letter correctly that what I have notice so by doing this slowly I have worked on my articulation in a new view.

27th May 2014
Today I worked on my breathing by humming to songs I know so I was humming the lyrics of a song instead of singing the song to see if I could hold a note in a humming mode instead of singing but when the humming any of the songs that had a note to hold I was able to hold the note fully, I have noticed that I could hold the note longer and didn't sound out of breath after which has shows that the exercises are working.

28th May 2014
Today I worked on my articulation for the end of year by going over the lines for the show and finding the lines that I find to have trouble pronouncing correctly or stumbling on also by doing this it also help me with learn the lines that I wasn't sure on I have notice by repeating the certain lines that I am able to say the line more clearly.

2rd June 2014
Today I worked on my breathing and articulation for the end of year show I worked on my breath for the big paragraph I have in the first scene so I could work out when I need to take a breath and as well working on my articulation so I can pronounce all my line correctly and not stumble on any of the lines. I have notice by doing this it help my performance I knew when to take the right breaths and my articulation was correct on my lines.

3rd June 2014
For my Last entry for the dairy I have done a recording of my singing the song "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons for this performance I have using all the exercise that I have down for the past three to four weeks to make this performance work. (please note this is recorded through a laptop and might not sound very good)

Physical Theatre

Physical Theatre

Monday 9th September 2013

what is Physical Theatre?

First thoughts
Physical Theatre is when actors use their bodies to portray and object with in a scene as there is no limit to the objects that the actor can create with their bodies, also physical theatre can be used to let the actor imagination run free as well it can be use to relax.

As the book "though the body " by Dymphna Cavalry suggest that theatre during the 1880's theatre had change due to the arrival of cinema as the theatre couldn't keep up with what cinema could do which led to theatre changing it tactics.

Out of all the practitioner the one who I took the most interest into was Artaud because of what he created to theatre even though people thought he was made by creating different ways to present theatre to make an impact on the audience as he created theatre of cruelty, the reason why I liked the work of Artaud was because he was afraid to change theatre by creating new technic to perform in and different ways to perform by using the lighting and sound affects to help, I liked the fact that he changed thing that people thought were mad and thought that he was made but now in modern time people agree with what he introduced and teach his students is what I like about him.

Other practionier that we study

evidence of what we were taught in by my peers

.

Contempory development of Physical theatre

Berkoff
He focus on physical plays and performance, in his plays he looks at the exaggeration and stylized mine , exaggerated facial expression, abstract use of voice and ensemble playing the third person.
examples of some of Berkoff plays East, metamorphous, west, trail.

Pina Bausch
she looks more at the relationship between the male and female actors, her performance are a mixture of dance and acting with some movement and some dialogue, also she used elaborate set as if she wanted water she would have real water on stage and have the actor to perform in it.

DV8 (Digital video 8)
This company looked at acting and using media mixture together to make the performance they mainly focus on themes and issues to devise dance and theatre, also every project has a new cast so there projects are mixed up with different people playing the main characters, also they question how could film enhance dance and dance can enhance film, also they would challenged male and female role in society

Frantic Assembly
There creators had no knowledge of the performance arts industry when they first started up, they would give their audience a pre show of the show they were going to perform but wouldn't not give any of the plot away to audience and they create audenident and also used a heavy use of music.

Monday 23rd September 2013
as self study we  were set to watch a you tube clip of Berkoff, Pina Bausch, DV8 and Frantic Assembly.

Berkoff
In the "Trail" the actors would use part of the set as a part of their perform they exaggerated on their facial expression and body gestures and language to tell the story with not much dialogue used. the costume the actors wore was all black to represent the blank canvas.

Pina Bausch
in this performance the actors would enter like a dance and then once they have got to their spot they would act and dance at the same time, there was no dialogue and the costume they wore was a bland cream colour also they use a lot of stylised movement.

DV8
They used more dialogue but had the use of narration to tell the story with the story being based on a current theme or issue also they used film and media that was intergraded into the set to explain the story more to the audience also they used stylised movement and dance to present the story.

Frantic Assembly
they perform an old story and use the original text but set the story in modern time by setting to play in a pub with all modern equipment like a gambling machine and pool tables and wearing modern clothing they also use stylised movement with dance to help resent the story to the audience.

What is Physical theatre?
Physical Theatre is the physical and verbal interpretation where physical and verbal are mixed together and they can be more themed base then scripted but do work on both.

Monday 23rd September
DV8
methods taken from to be "straight with you", we were giving a context and we had to devise a scene with out words to start of with we read the context on drug and find the key trigger words for the movement me and Sasha was actors moving on stage with someone else reading the context to us I played a mixture of different characters from a father of a son who was on drugs to a school boy on drug to helping his friend stop on each trigger word we change our position and movement to represent the word we repeated the scene twice but change the element of the subtext as in the first scene we change when we herd the trigger word on the second scene we took the trigger word out and read the text and when we knew the word was coming up we change to show that word instead of some saying it.

With devising with out word I found creating the actions and movement easy to think of the action to represent to key trigger words was as you to try one thing then change it if it doesn't work or that you could have more then one idea on one word but I found hard was choosing the right trigger word from the context that the actions had to represent.

Out of the two situation one with the trigger words and the one with out I preferred the second one to the first as this one you could be more flexible as you didn't have to wait for the trigger word to be said by the narrator reading the context without the trigger words.

Monday 30th September
Frantic Assembly
methods taken from "Klub", this time we improvised movement around the given context of getting ready to go out. we thought on how we would get ready and used our own movements to a beat of 8 and also the music help keep to the beat, we developed it further by giving a character more etherized movement of a poses to show to the audience that a certain poses was important when getting ready, to add to this we change the setting to a toilet but still the same movement that we devised also we move the space were we had a smaller mirror which made us come more closer to the audience and experiment with leaves whilst still doing the movement this was a effective as the audience could see more of what you was doing closer up then we change to it to thing that was going wrong but still using levels this was effective as the audience could see more of our facial expression when thing went wrong.  The development that I liked the most was when doing the small  mirror and having things wrong as I could think of so many thing that could go wrong so it was fin to experiment with what was going wrong with the levels helping to show where thing had go wrong, once we did the levels we changed it in to a scene but we were all doing our own movement but also we could inter act with each other and include others within our own performances. at some point there was times where I could developed it with my own ideas, some of the ideas I had was someone comes around your house once you had got ready another idea was to have a situation once you had gone out and the last idea I had was doing the opposite to oringal movement instead of getting ready to go out to come back after the night out and start taking the clothes that you was wearing off and start getting ready for bed.

Monday 7th October
Stockholm
the exercise that we did was taken from Stockholm,

this task involved creating a scene which shows one room within a 24 hour period from the view of CCTV. the room that me and Amelia chose was the kitchen as it could show the couple from the morning eating breakfast though to dinner then though to going to bed once we created the scene we performed the scene to give the audience a clear understanding of someone story as well this task was a fun task to created as I had to think about my own daily routine to help create the scene.

then we had to think and write down 10 question we wanted to ask the other person me and Amelia went with the theme of a couple would have trust issues once we had written down the questions we had to look at the person reactions to the questions whilst they were doing the routine this part of the task was interesting to do and watch as I had to think about what my reaction would be to a certain questions and to watch Amelia reaction to my questions.

the final part to the task was we were giving a random script and we had to use the dialogue of the script to add to the movement that we had created we had to develop which parts of the script that we had to add movements to, to make the dialogue make scene with the movements this part of the task was the part that I found the most challenging as at some points the dialogue didn't work at all and I found it hard to trying to making it all work. If we were giving a different random script we could have change the movements or make new movements as the possibility could be endless.

THE END OF YEAR SHOW

HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY AND NEVER BE FOUND!

How to disappear completely and never be found is by Fin Kennedy and the play follows the character of Charlie who is a successful business executive who has a stressful life style Charlie is also a drug user as he uses cocaine as well the character carries around his mother's urn, The play follows the character through to his breakdown but as well the play works backwards as throughout the first act Charlie see his Pathologist called Sophie who is trying to work out how Charlie died, towards the end of the first act Charlie meets one of his mother's friend called Mike, Mike help Charlie disappear by changing his identity from Charlie Hunt to Adam Westbury, the play ends with the death of Mike and Charlie/Adam.

The character that I played was

Key             Characters that link together

The Tube Man - A character who works in lost property at Finsbury Park Tube station, character helps Charlie who has collapsed, the tube man tell Charlie about people losing stuff like umbrellas and mobile  phone and tells Charlie that people should be more carefully. The tube man also pick pockets Charlie after he has noticed that Charlie took a watch out of the lost property box.

Eric - Eric is Charlie best mate they meet up for a drink at a pub and that's when Eric notices the urn and the tablets that Charlie has, Eric is a character who is a bit up himself and tells Charlie about his behaviour at work his been noticed and warns Charlie by telling about how good his job is and that he doesn't want to throw it away.

Landlord - The Landlord shows Adam around the flat that Adam is about to buy and discovers abut about Adam that doesn't seem right as Adam asks about the room that doesn't any furniture, the Landlord refers to his wife Jean a couple of times, once the Adam give the Landlord the money for the flat the Landlord discovers cocaine and kicks Adam out and keeps the money that he gave.

Pawn man - The Pawn man notice Adam walk in and noticed Adam not feeling very well, the Pawn man links to the Tube man scene as the character both talk about lost property and that people should be more careful with there stuff. The Pawn man scene also links to the Tube man scene with the watch that the tube man gave to Charlie but in this scene Adam is trying to sell the watch but the pawn man doesn't accept it and kicks him out.

Barry -Berry is the character that comes to Adam at the end  scene as Barry is after the money that Charlie/Adam they owe him but when Barry finds Adam his attitude towards him changes as Barry starts to feel bad for Adam for the state that he is in.

I was giving the roles to challenge me on how well I can multi role on characters and how I could differentiation the character so they are all different from each other but for some of my character they link to each other so I had to present them in a way that they would link and at the same time be different to each other.

Cast

Tom - Charlie, Ghost
Ryan Y - Adam, Ghost, Fat Man
Sasha - Sophie, Ghost
Natasha - Ellie, Bureaucrat 3, Nurse, Medical Student, Party Person 1, Ghost, Young Women,
Natalia- Doctor, Party person 3, American client 1, Dani, Bureaucrat 1, Ghost,Women, Medical student
Amelia - Party person 2, American Client 2, Angelina, Yevtsye, Priest, Medical Student, Bureaucrat 2, Man.
Kat - Roberta, Mike, Older Man, Ghost.

When we were giving the script we looked though each scene and looked how we could add physical Theatre to the performance for some scenes we decide that some scene we shouldn't add physical theatre to, We added physical to the performance as the script was non naturalist and using physical Theatre to make the performance more abstract and the Physical theatre can helps explore Charlie/Adam mind more.

Pre Scene - Tube train- we used sticks to show that we were on a tube train a the sticks represent the pole that passengers hold on to as well we used the sticks to show the doors of the train where Charlie forces open the doors. we also positions our body is in away to show a tube train.

Scene 1 Tube Man Scene- During the paragraph when the tube man address the audience talking about the umbrella, one of the Ghost brought an umbrella on and put it up the umbrella behind me and places it in to my hand on the line "The Umbrella the safety net of our nation" using the umbrella added empathise to the line and also backs up what the tube man is saying,  and then on the line "and now the shrill self promoting portable phone has taken it place" I pull the umbrella down to show that I wasn't talking about the umbrella any more and handing it back to the Ghost.

Scene 2 Doctor Scene - We added physical to this scene to give a sense to the audience am I here or am I not, as the doctor is listing things that could be wrong with Charlie and the Ghost are doing the diagnoses for her, by having the ghost in the scene makes the scene more abstract and surreal to take the scene away from a stereotypical doctors and make the scene more engage.

Charlie big speech Scene - We used Physical to this scene to back up  what Charlie saying by giving the audience a visual to what Charlie was talk, but as well we use voice over to this scene to break up the flow of the performance which help keeping the audience engage.

Office scene ( Eat, sleep, rave, repeat)- we used physical to this scene to break up Charlie dialogue and to give the audience a visual reference to drug use and abuse as from the video we use the office people to show what the side effects of drug use and to show the audience what Charlie gets from taking drugs. By adding the movement we did it in the style of the frantic assembly as they move to counts of 8.

Charlie transition to Adam Scene - We added physical to this scene to make the scene more abstract as the scene is the key scene of the play where Charlie becomes Adam to show the transition to someone new we show Adam giving up his life but having the Ghost take Charlie soul away from Adam to show this we use over sized credit card which the Ghost broke up and throw in to a toilet which show Adam saying Goodbye to his old life.

Priest Scene - We added physical to this scene to make the scene more engaging to the audience by having on of the Ghost dancing in the back ground to back up what the priest is saying to Adam but as well to give a visual to the audience to make the scene more abstract and unreal to take the audience away from the stereotypical grave yard which you can see from the video.

Bureaucrat Scene - This is the final scene which we added physical we added the physical by using a props as we used sticks to forms the desk of the bureaucrat office desks the Ghost hold the sticks up then the sticks move to form the car for Adam driving test by using the sticks it adds the a different and engaging level to the scene as it give a visual to the scene and as well sets the scene so we didn't have to use projections to set the scene.

When we added the physical to any scene we did it in a no liner way as we worked on scene that have needed more physical then others scenes but when we were doing the blocking we blocks the scene in liner, When adding the physical we decide to called the characters who did the physical Ghost to give them a physicals form but these character were always in blacks to show the blank canvas.

The ideas that I came up with is the tube man scene with having something to do with a umbrella in the scene as originally the scene was set with me bring the umbrella on when I came back on with Charlie glass of water but we change it to have the umbrella come in later when I talk about the umbrellas to Charlie.

A scene that worked well was the office scene as the movement that we  created show someone who abused drugs and the side effects of drugs abuse but there is part of the that scene which didn't work which is where some of the movement were small and not noticeable so if it was done again the movement need to be more exaggerated and bigger to make the scene look bold and stand out.

Blocking
When we started the blocking we did it in a liner so we went though the script scene by scene and started with the basic blocking where should people stand when should they move before we added the physical theatre but we also went thought the script to find scene that could be recorded which is in the style of DV8 which breaks up the show from live to record by doing this it keep the audience engage and also gives them a new sense to the performance, the scene we used a recording for was the meeting with the American Clients we records this to get the full blocking of a meet by having a Skype call with the Americans all the dialogue would be pointing towards the audience as if they were the web cam that Charlie was talking to, the next scene that we record was the scene were Adam wakes up in Sophie's lab we recorded this scene to give the audience a different texture to the performance as the whole scene is supposed to be in Sophie's head so by having the scene record for the audience it gives them a sense that scene is not real, The last scene that we recorded was the end scene when Charlie and Adam walk off we recorded and change the scene from having Charlie falling in the to sea as one we couldn't present that in recording or live performance and we changed it to make the end of the performance more emotional for the audience as well for the audience to see that Charlie and Adam are the same person.

Lighting
For the lighting we had a tutorial with Alex from Hertford Theatre who explain how to set up and used the lighting desk but we left the main controls of the light to Natasha who programs to light for every scene of performance and added the lighting effect but the rest of us help choose the colour gels were needed for each scene as the colour of the gels matter as they help set the mood and the emotion of the scene. for every scene we had some form of wash to help light the scene, for the office scene we use a range of colour such as greens, red and blue to show the mixture of emotions but as well the green light show the colour of someone who is throwing up. As you can see from the video of the lighting effects that we use for the scene also went in time with the music of the scene which adds more of visual lighting effects for audience and moves the audience away from simple lighting of a wash.  This is the diagram that Alex gave us and which we used to help us to work out what light is where and where the light connected to.

Sound
For the sound we had a total of 200 different sound effects which were broken down to voice recordings and sound effects, for the sound Kat took charge of getting the sound effects that we needed such as the sound for the tube train and a mobile phone ringing, and Ryan Y did the voice recording getting the actors voice for certain scene.

We decided to use voice recording as they were one a great way for transitions for scene to scene but as the they also break up the performance from live to recorded which is a another way to keep the audience engage and gives them a different texture to the performance, another reason we used voice recording was because we didn't have enough bodies to play the parts of the characters on stage as if the lines recorded we live which would mean more costume changes and less time for the scene to change, but there is one recording which we had the actor who voice it was on stage by the having the recording and having Ryan Y reacting to the recording gave a different sense for the audience then getting it back to live performance.

Costume
With the Costume of the performance we all had a black base because having a black base mean that we are a blank canvas waiting to become and character or a item but we also decided that the Ghost should also be in a black base so the audience wouldn't notice them as much in a black out and when the lights came but on they wouldn't take the attention away from the main characters.

For other costume we tried to get a costume that would represent the character that we were playing at the time but we all had one item of costume apart from me that was using the start and end of the performance for me my item was used only at the start of the performance which was Hawaiian shirt.

The other costume my characters had...

Tube Man- A High Visibility Jackets and ID Card .

Eric - A suit

Landlord - Hoodie

Pawn Man - Jumper and Golden Chain

Barry - Tracksuit bottoms, Zoodie and a Coat.

Projection
With the projection that we required me and Natalia read though the script and decide what sort of projection we needed for each scene, most of the projection that we research we used to help set the scene to give the audience a sense where the characters at a certain scene.

Some of the projections were pictures other were video which we had recorded and other we pictures which help set the scene, For some of the images me and Natalia edited the picture to get the effect that we want for such the image we got of the Gravesend ferry we made the picture black and white to make the scene more more depressing as well we add a cross in front of the picture to show that the audience are looking though a window by doing this we could play with the blocking of this scene by having Adam look at the audience where the window would be and giving the audience and image of what Adam is seeing.

Another scene we got a video for the background instead of a picture was the Priest scene as we research the images for a backdrop but we could find any that work that we want so we got a video of You Tube which had what me and Natalia wanted and edited the video by making it black and white to show the emotion of the scene which would be sad and depressing,.

My contribution to the overall performance we creating and ordering the projections that were needed for certain scene but as well the adding ideas to the scene on how the a scene should be presented the main scene that I added most of the ideas was the tube man scene and part of the end scene with Barry.

If I was taken out of the equation of the performance rehearsals and blocking I wouldn't be missed as I didn't give many idea's for other scene I mainly gave ideas for the scene that I was in as well I didn't give any ideas for the sound or lighting I just helped the setting up the light but I was more giving ideas for the projections as I took more of a control.

If I could do this again I would try to give more ideas to the creation of scene and coming up with more ideas for the adding physicals to any of the scene but I should give more of a contribution to scene instead of letting over people take control.

Stanislavsky  Theory's

Method

- you be come the role in real life e.g. Heath Ledger, the joker in Batman.
Method acting is not always the most accessible way of acting.

System
- preparation
  • Body
  • Mind
  • relaxation                                       Key
  • meditation                                      RED - Body
  • warming up                                    BLUE - Mind
  • imagination
- Given circumstance
  • Back ground the character, scene or play
- Magic IF
  • Fills in given circumstances interpretation.
- Emotional memory relate
  • use own personal experience to feel characters emotions.
To learn given circumstances and to apply them to practical every time I see a script I should ask myself about
  • Who?
  • Where?
  • When?
  • Why?
  • How?

when thinking about principles of acting I need to think about what techniques did I study and use during each lesion, in the lesion 11/09/2013 the techniques that I studied was Stanislavski system technique of given circumstances and explore ways of using given circumstances for our chosen character also I study the technique of Magic IF this helps me the fill in any of the missing gap of the given circumstance of my character Helmer back ground.

when using them practical I had to use for four W's and the H to think about the given circumstance for my character of Helmer from the play "Doll House to achieves this I had to read the back to the play which I could find by reading the script to have some understanding how my character would be thinking and feeling physically and emotionally to show this I could use role on the wall for my character of Helmer.

Role on the Wall of Helmer

using this techniques has help me to think more about the characterisation of the character Helmer by thinking about the given circumstances for him and think about what his emotions would be and how use show them physically towards other character also if some of the given circumstances are missing I could use Magic IF to fill in any of the missing gaps.

Stanislavski's system - preparing the "blank canvas"

Relaxation
Imagination
Circles of attention

Relaxation -

chakras + light symbolic centres this helps the actor to focus where the acting tool comes from if they are having trouble working it and also helps an actor opens up their body to take on a role. To do this task we had to lie on the floor and focus on where in the body the tool that the actor need to perform come from by using chakras and using different colour to represent each area.

Imagination

taking on a roles objectives "I want to" gives the actor an drive and motivation to make a character realistic this helps the actor to connect with the character to prove this works I did to experiments with different characters the first character I become was count Dracula with his I want to bring darkness and death, this work as it makes you think about the character as a whole and their backgrounds to want achieve their goal also to think about myself I chose this character as I wanted to explore my own darkness to see if this character could open it up to me, the other character I become was willy Wonka with his "I wanted to bring happiness to everyone though candy" I chose this character to see what good side within my self I could bring to this role.

Circles of attention

Room - Set or other person/actor
Building - Theatre
Collage - Audience
Ware - Location of the theatre
Somewhere in England - Context of the show
Somewhere in the World - reviews

= All of these help to heighten sense of awareness and peripheral vision

Out of the three exercises Imagination and circles of attention help me the most of focus on my interpretation of a character with the imagination exercise helping me to think about the character objectives which help to develop the character even more to achieve that objective. the circle of attention help me to focus more on my sense and my vision to understand what I am seeing to help explore a character and with what I was seeing meaning. I didn't find relaxation helpful as it doesn't make me feel where a certain tool comes from and if I cant do something how this would help me to improve the tool.

Stanislavski's system

Objective: To practically explore emotional memory.

Emotional memory is the use of these technique ......

  • works with the imagination.
  • influences daily decisions by bridging past - tense + future - tense
  • works in coalition with other tool such as imagination and magic if.
  • this technique may not work every time - so you will need to be open - playful to all stimuli.
  • using past experience + emotions to bring sense of truth to your performance.
  • can be called affective memory emotional recall sense memory.
  • is an actors store room.

Magic IF

ways that we use the magic if

  • Placing the character into the 'if' situation.
  • Imagination
  • get to know the character
  • adding depth to the character where there isn't enough information.

Monday 4th November 2013

rehearsals for Doll House, we had to come up with a smart target that we could achieve by the end of the rehearsals.

SMART TARGET -  To Develop the relationship between Nora and Helmer and to Develop the movement between the characters.

- we achieved this target by focusing on parts of the script that emphasise the emotion in the relationship and we work on how the character feel though there movement.
we use Stanislavsky system of the magic if to get to know the character to have a better understanding of the two character relationship to have a better understanding on how the character would react in the scene. This was successful as we were able to understand the character better in know where they each stood.

Monday 11th November 2013

SMAR TARGET - To work on the connections between the characters.

we achieve this target by working more on the emotions of the characters by holding hands and the touching of the face.
we used Stanislavski system of emotional memory to work on the emotion of the characters as the scene that we played the characters of Helmer and Nora is the most important scene emotion wise as it is the scene where Nora leaves Helmer so we used emotional memory to get the right emotions for the scene, I used my past memories of anger, hate, sadness and pride to balance the character for the scene to work. This was successful as the we felt that we were the character instead of playing.

Monday 25th November 2013

NO SMART TARGET SET.

For the first full run though with an audience watching and grading us, I felt that I could have done better in my performance as I felt that hadn't played the character as before and didn't interact with Nora as much as the past the props added to the scene I added a newspaper I used this prop to show that at some points that Helmer wasn't interested in what his wife was saying also I felt that I didn't use any of Stanislavski system in my performance, out of the marking from my peers I realised that I needed to pronounce my words clearer so the audience can understand them more. if I could do that performance again I would include more Stanislavski system like emotional memory to help the performance more.

Monday 2nd December 2013

SMART TARGET - To polish off the performance to make final sense of the line and emotions and work on what was said about our performance from last lesson.

To achieve this target we went though the scene add the any emotion we missed and I worked on pronouncing the lines and words right and get the accent right I achieved this by using Stanislavski system of relaxation and using chakras to help set my mind and voice in to getting the words out right and saying the lines as someone in that time period of the 1800s. This worked for me as I was able to pronounce the words correctly and able to say it in a posh accent but the only problem I had was holding the accent and not go back to my normal voice.

Principles of Acting Part 2 Steven Berkoff

We are now looking at a new which is base on Steven Berkoff we are going to look at his interperation  of the play Agamemnon but to start with we did some exercise to get us into the role where we work and interlock together as this is how the performance is going to work as when it comes to the performance we need to work as one as if one person slips it can ruin the rest of the piece to helps us understand working as one we looked at some drama games which are.......

Wednesday 8th January 2014

Frogs in a Pond - This drama game was looking at who we work as a team as one person jump and others have to make the ripple effect of that person jumping the idea is the person who is closest to the person who jump so be the first person to jump after then so on to the last person who is the fetherst away, to add to this there is no commutation is allowed so we have to really on our vision to tell us when we should jump.

Plato Exercise - this game also looks at team work but i a different way as one person is on one side of a disc and the other are on the operate side of the disc the idea of the game is keep the disc balance as the person who is on their own is moving all the time and the group have to move along with that signal  person. This game is testing our concentration and vision to see how well we can adapt to achieve the same goal.

Becoming the Set
 -
this game is also looking at team work but as well looking at our imagination skills with our communication skills to come to the same goal of becoming the set that was called out a view example of set that was called out was to form a "Tube Train" these is looking at unison movement to help create naturalistic set.

Loupe lop - for this game we had to pretend that a part of our body was looped to something and that sound one was pulling us and we had to show the movement by having the part of the body that was lopped leading and the rest of the body followed, by doing this it can help when developing new characters.

We moved on to look at this section of a script we looked for words that stood out for us and we had to think of an action that would represent the word, i choose the word "Armoured"and used the action of raising my left arm to show that i had arm on. For this task it was a challenge to add the ensemble part when share the movement we had all created and to make it work with the text but as well as to say the text at the same time whilst taking breathes at the same time, the part that was difficult was when we had to say the text at the same time we overcome this by reading the though the text several times and then going though adding in the breaths we could take whilst reading as an ensemble.

But working as a ensemble vocal and physical which means that we a movement or a set is require the actor has to work as a team to make the movement or set look realistic which is the same when vocal is added as the actor with vocal that if one person is out of sync with the rest the audience will notice which comes the same with physical if one person not in the right place they will stand out to the audience.

Wednesday 22nd January 2014

At the start of this lesson we were given the script for Beroff version of "Agamemnon", we looked at the extract that we are going to perform which is about the return of Agamemnon to Argos with the scene starting with the towns people talking to them self then a message from the heralds to Agamemnon wife Clytemnestra.

We did a read though whilst being told what are characters are and the lines that we are each going to say as working in an ensemble require everyone to learn their lines as it can muck up the end performance if some doesn't know a line or miss as we are not working as ensemble so part of this unit does focus on ourselves as well as the others in the group.

We looked at the story of the play and we found out that Agamemnon and Menelaus are best of friends but characters are married but menalys wife Helen is having a affair with Pairs prince of troy, Agamemnon the King of Argos decides to help his friend and fight Paris for Helen, Argos declares war on Troy during this long war lots of Trojans were killed this action angers the Gods which request Agamemnon to make a sacrifice  that virgin blood must be spilled to do this Agamemnon sacrifices his own child which is also the child of Clytemnestra but whilst Agamemnon is been away fighting he has been having a affair with Cassandra when Agamemnon returns to Argos he brings Cassandra with him who is carrying Agamemnon unborn child which angers Clytemnestra after Agamemnon sacrifices their child but Agamemnon wasn't the only person having an affair as Clytemnestra is also having an affair, Clytemnestra is plotting against her husband she plans to kill her husband and his lover at the end of the play Clytemnestra kill the couple.

Wednesday 29th January 2014

Starting to stage "Agamemnon"

For today's lesson we start to block the start of the extract by looking at the start of it with the chorus and the Heralds we discussed as a group what we could do for this as how could we make look like a ensemble, here is the layout of the stage that we created and are going to use.
Diagram 1

From this stage layout we look at the script and started to look what part of the text should we move on for the chorus that is is so we decided that we Clystemtrast played by Sasha for this part says "by a ruined wall" that we turn from facing out towards the audience to face in and look at each but it had to be done in unison so the ensemble works which means that we all turn at the same time. from this diagram you can see that we had decided to set the performance in the round to add more of an effect to the piece.

The line "It shape suggest a man running" is when the herald enter who are played by Kat,Amelia and Natalia the character run around the chorus who are being played by Tom, Tash,Ryan Y and myself with Sasha later on till they chorus finishing say "your there" that is when the heralds stop is the middle of the chorus as the diagram shows.

Once the herald have enter and give their speech to clytemnestra the chorus do movements on certain lines the first line that the chorus move is "Troy has fallen her shrines dissolve in dust" the chorus fall to the floor to show the shrines dissolving the chorus stay on the floor as the lines to continue to "chatting machines of death that spit from iron mouths" the chorus spit then for the line "By the hot breath" they lift their head and take to deep breath then to move up form the floor by the left arm to upright kneeling followed by the right arm to then stand with the arm still raised on the line "sorchech the sins that stank to haven". then as unison all the character say "Aries" this could be the one part the need to work in the ensemble.

then next line that the chorus move on is "dumdum shell exploded" this is were the chorus move back like they have blasted back from an explosion to move on the line "Their scattering claws of steel explore man veins and arteries" the chorus scratch their chrest from left to right then down their arms to then clap when arteries is said.

The chorus don't move the "anti-missile, missile, missile" where Ryan Y falls to the floor on "anti- missile, then I fall to the floor on "missile" and Tash and Tom both fall to the floor on the last
"missile" then the chorus get back up on "thousand tones of weight"to show the weight the chorus they have their hands above the hand to show they are hold something and have their knees bent to show the weight, the chorus keep their arm there until the line "burning under monstrous sun" where they rise to their tip toes and keep arms in the air to show the sun.

that is where we got up to for this lesson but it was clear that we need to work on the ensemble skills as at some points need improving were we are not in time with each other by doing this will improve the performance but aswell shows our skill working in an ensemble.

Wednesday 6th February 2014

For this lesson we had the whole cast in so to start we showed Ryan Y and Sasha what was created and some of the ideas we have to other part of the blocking that needs to be blocked but as well we had to add Ryan Y to the movement that the chorus do and tell him on what line that the chorus move on but also to tell Sasha the line which she has to stand on the table which is "Why should we give for another losey wife" once we had explain to Ryan Y and Sasha we went over the blocking that we had done and worked on the ensemble skills in the blocking to prevent some slipping up on the performance.

Then we continue with the blocking with the line "And men fall like flies" which fall down but not to the floor then the chorus come back up on the line "we sloshed around".

The next part which required our ensemble skills to make it work as this part would be clear to an audience if a mistake was to happen the lines is "RAT,TAT,TAT,RAT,TAT,TAT, Kaboom, Kablast, Kablam, Splat!, Phutt! Smash! Wow! Watch them! Watch them!" the action that we create for this are for the "RAT, TAT,TAT" part is right hand then left which is repeated for the second "RAT,TAT,TAT"  then for the "Kaboom" our hands come together then apart together again to "splat were our hands raised but out then on "Phutt" we drop our hands then we kneeling on the floor on "smash" we stay on the floor for rest of the heralds speech as they rise to stand after the "RAT,TAT, TAT" part.

The chorus members fall to lye on the floor for the part "For target practice we tock them" the chorus lye on the floor are climbing the wall to show that they are trying to escape before they die which the chorus do.

The chorus don't back up till the line "Our beloved and holly Agamemnon" were the chorus are on their knees then turn to sit on the floor for Clytemnestra speech were chorus just watch her talk about her husband return at the end of the speech Clytemnestra ask the heralds a question "what happen to the other half of Agamemnon" which is the cue for the chorus to move and form a set of a ship with the heralds in side of the ship with Amelia as the front of the ship at start the ship moves clam then it get more ruff this is another part were are ensemble skills were we need to work together in unison as well to create the effect of the ship. The skill that we use for building the ship was Physical theatre as it required the whole of the chorus to create the outer look of the ship and the heralds which move on the balls of their feet to show that the ship was moving.

By using Physical theatre is in the style of Beroff as he believes that the actors should become the set and that the movement that is created by the actor should tell the plot of the play by using complex words help in creating the movement for the actor which makes the text more interesting for the audience visual and vocal.

Once the heralds finish talking about the ship the chorus member return to their original position for the rest of the paragraph once the heralds have finished their paragraph there is a short silence as Sasha and Tasha swap place and character so that Tash become Clytemnestra and Sasha become the chorus, the chorus and the herald as swap from their original position to new position which is shown in the diagram
Diagram 2

as you can see that the chorus are all in new position and that the heralds are now part of the chorus.

if you compare the diagram one and two you can see that the tables you for Clytemnestra and Agamemnon have change we decide to keep them the same as the layout was fine.

The next part we created did really rely on the ensemble as one wrong mistake can though every one as we learn as we created cannon the line "no more horrors the second no more horror" as the script first has the chorus say the paragraph thought once then repeat it as this follows the style of Berkoff who uses repeation in his text even though we were still in an ensemble by vocally repeating the lines in this way add effect to the performance but also as empthise to the plot of the script.

To create this effect we number our 1-7 then after the person has said "widows" then you start so would should all finish one of each other this was the challenging part by saying in sync with each and all starting on the right line and and saying at the same speed as some people were reading it fast and catching up with the person in front of then as other people were saying slow so they were finishing at the same time as the person behind them.

once we finished saying our "no more horrors" we each turn to face Agamemnon who has enter whilst saying the "no more horrors" part we were all giving a line to turn on the last line that is said we all take a bow for Agamemnon who is played by Ryan Y as his is our king and that we are happy to see him.

Wednesday 26th February 2014

For today lesson we look at finish the blocking by  looking at the end  scene between Agamemnon and Clytemnestra by having the character on a table and have the chorus in the middle between the two table watching them talk so that Agamemnon and Clytemnestra have more authority over the town people. whilst Agamemnon is talk the chorus look at him and cheer but also they look at each other when he mention "i know cancers have been grown here" once he had finished his monologue the chorus turn to face Clytemnestra when she starts talking and stay facing her whilst she is saying her monologue once she has finished her the chorus then turn and face Agamemnon again then back and forth twice by having the chorus doing we are using one of Berkoff style of exaggeration by making the argument between the two characters more interesting by showing that the chorus are interested in the couple arguing.

Wednesday 5th March 2014

During today's lesson we start go do full run though as we have now finished the blocking but as well thinking about are characterisation and our vocal of the character that we think we are playing for the chorus we had to think who were are in the scene and how would the character say that line by trying to keep away from monotone but also we looked at where the ensemble wasn't working and going through the movement that wasn't right. for the characterisation I image my character one of the townspeople who lost his son at war my character doesn't agree with going to war with Troy so at some points would say a line sarcastic.

One part that we need to work on was the ship movement when it is rough to start all we were doing was going back and forth but just fast which doesn't show a ship in a storm so we work on changing the movement of the ship trying to get a Mexico wave type of effect which show a ship going up and down in wave the only problem was getting the unison to work as we weren't getting the effect that we wanted.

Wednesday 12th March 2014

During today's lesson we more looked at the characterisation is our voice we did this by doing several run through trying to add the characterisation in our voice as well as continuing looking at the movement and any of the block that wasn't work but we also did several read through to help with our voice but the main problem we found was the "RAT,TAT,TAT" part we were all sound monotone we kept going over and over this trying to change our voice from monotone into something that sounds more interesting to listen to but as well looking at the the dynamics of our voice by changing the tone but as well the volume so at the start we are loud to the last "watch them" is a stage whisper.

But we also looked at the cannon towards to then looking at our timing and our tone and volume of our voice as this as well sounds monotone as some points we kept on going over this to trying and improve the times then going over the tone to make it more interesting and make our voice stand out from each other we did the same with the volume we increase it so it wasn't quiet and you could hear each other.

Wednesday 19th March 2014

For this lesson we continue to rehearse but look at more of our movement and our characterisation of the those movement and during this lesson we made some change to the blocking but when we looked at the movement so we could what each movement was and see if the chorus mainly where in time but to see if everyone of the chorus knew what line that certain movements are on this was working on our ensemble skills make sure that the performance looks like an ensemble piece, also the heralds did the same as the chorus looking at their movement are they moving on the line and had they remember that someone of the movements had been change or cut.

We also had another look at the ship movement to make sure that the effect that we want is there no full which it was we didn't need to work on it but also we looked at the "RAT,TAT,TAT" movements to see if they still work we made one change the chorus once they went down on how they would turn for the part of the arrows.

But Ryan Y came up with some ideas that would change the end scene when Agamemnon enters and does his speech Ryan had the idea of instead of having Agamemnon of the table giving his speech that he step down and walk through the town people he had the idea on the first "I know you" he would touch Sasha.

Wednesday 26th March 2014

For one of our last rehearsals before the assessment we look over the whole performance to see that the ensemble and unions is working that everything is right and did and final changes that needed to be change to make the performance the best and that it was in the style of Berkoff.

the only change we did was editing Ryan Y idea which he edited himself we change the chorus the original idea was to have the chorus kneeling for the whole of Agamemnon speech but we change it so that the chorus would go down to kneeling when Agamemnon is saying " I know you" once he had walk past you by doing this it shows that Agamemnon knows what the towns people have been upto and that the town people are trying to act that nothing happen by being on their knee at Agamemnon feet.

By going down to our knees one by one once Agamemnon has walked past shows the ensemble and show that we are in unison but using cannon to do the movement but when Clytemnestra starts to talk and the chorus all get up to face her was all done in unison and the movement between the two characters arguing was all in unison which is showing off our ensemble skills.
